Uber Philippines: Forced to suspend operations after clashing with regulators
Uber Philippines went offline for disobeying the law over driver permits
On Monday, August 14, 2017, the Philippines Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered Uber Philippines to suspend its operations in all over Philippines for one month after the company allegedly disregarded an earlier government order to stop recruiting new drivers.
In response, the San Francisco-based company had slammed the authorities’ decision by issuing a letter on media channel, arguing that the order constitutes “the blatant violation of USI’s (Uber Systems Inc) right to due process” and highlighting the absence of convincing proofs to show that the company had willfully violated the law.
But finally, Uber Philippines confirmed its “temporary” suspension. “Effective 6:00 a.m. of Tuesday, August 15, Uber will suspend its operations in compliance with an LTFRB order last night,” Uber Philippines said in a statement posted on their social media accounts.
Rival to profit from Uber Philippines’s suspension
Uber’s suspension is about to benefit the company’s main Philippine rival, Grab, which operates in seven Southeast Asian countries overall. Grab has reportedly seen a nice blossom in customer demand over the past few days since Uber being slapped. Trouble in the Philippines could probably cause Uber to lose ground in yet other international markets to Grab and other competitors.
